La Romana.- A total of 80 pediatric surgeries of otorhinolaryngology and urology were performed without any cost for the patients at the Central Medical centre of the Corporation La Romana by the American foundation « Healing the Children », in coordination with the Eastern Beneficial Employers « Hogar del Niño ».

The medical team evaluated approximately 200 patients, on whom one practiced urologic interventions, vagino plasty and other surgeries.

The day also included 60 surgeries in otorhinolaryngology cases like glandular corrections, perforations of tympanum, chronic otitis, foreign bodies in the nasal horns and tympanoplasties.

These surgeries were performed by Doctor Lee Eisenberg, titular of otorhinolaryngology of the Engelwood Hospital in the New Jersey and by Doctor Robin Brody, plastic surgeon of facial reconstruction, specialist as an otolaryngologist, certified by the American Committee of Reconstructive Surgery.

President Leonel Fernandez instructed Public Works minister Victor Diaz Rúa to expedite the construction of the Coral highway (east), approved in the Senate last week amid controversy regarding the project’s amount.

A November 13 missive from Diaz Rúa to Hacienda minister Vicente Bengoa stresses the chief executive’s interest to include the work in the 2009 Budget.

The project is part of several Public Works projects set for bidding, among the Duarte Corridor at a cost of around 160 million dollars, whose construction is slated to conclude in two years, and VIADOM 2009, via concession, of around 400 million dollars, which would take three years to build.

We have instructions to begin those for early next year; we also have already approved by the Senate the Coral highway and the Tourist Boulevard of the Atlantic (BTA) said Diaz in the letter to Bengoa, which refers to infrastructure Fernandez announced in his August 16 inaugural speech.
